Tracy A. Cole

Tracy, a Kansas native, obtained her undergraduate degree from the University of Kansas in 1980 with a double major in Accounting and Business Administration. She then went to work in private business for 6 years before returning to KU in 1986 to pursue a law degree.

In 1989, she earned her J.D. from the University of Kansas School of Law. She began her legal career and became a partner in Hershberger, Patterson, Jones & Roth, a law firm in Wichita, Kansas. The Hershberger Patterson firm had a varied practice that included insurance defense and medical malpractice defense and it was there that Tracy began to develop her litigation skills.

In 1998, Tracy moved to Hutchinson, Kansas and began working with the Gilliland & Hayes firm. There she continued her practice in insurance defense work and litigation, gradually coming to focus on medical malpractice defense work. During her 22 years at Gilliland & Hayes as an associate, partner, shareholder and member, she worked in both the Wichita and Hutchinson offices and continued to have an active trial practice representing defendants, including numerous medical providers.

Tracy has tried cases in both State and Federal Court and has argued cases before the Kansas Court of Appeals, the Kansas Supreme Court and the 10th Circuit Court of Appeals. She maintains an active statewide litigation practice with an emphasis on defending medical providers in both the courtroom and before licensing authorities.

Tracy is a member of the Kansas Bar Association, Kansas Association of Defense Counsel (KADC), Topeka Bar Association and Defense Research Institute (DRI). She served as a KADC board member for several years, including serving as President in 2010.

Her civic involvement has included serving as a Girl Scout leader, truancy volunteer, board president of Roots & Wings in Sedgwick County, and board president of Big Brothers Big Sisters of Reno County.
